    In 2024, Yellotec, in partnership with Teledyne FLIR’s advanced thermal imaging equipment, embarked on a specialised Tech Tour to provide a firsthand look at its exceptional capabilities in real-world defence applications.

    From high-speed target tracking to precision measurements in extreme conditions, these cutting-edge R&D instruments demonstrated their unparalleled accuracy, resolution, and speed. Throughout the testing process, the powerful combination of FLIR cameras, software, and SDKs showcased their ability to capture critical thermal data with ease, reinforcing their essential role in defence research and development. This experience not only highlighted the sophistication of FLIR technology but also underscored its impact in pushing the boundaries of innovation and operational effectiveness.

    With participation from Denel, ARMSCOR, SAAB, Incomar and CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research), the technology tour took place at several specialized defence testing sites and shooting ranges. Each location provided a unique environment to showcase the advanced capabilities of FLIR’s R&D instruments in real-world defence applications.

    During the tour, the Yellotec’s dedication and expertise in utilizing FLIR’s advanced thermal imaging technology were recognized with a prestigious R&D Science Platinum Partner Award of the Year from Teledyne FLIR. 

    Overview of the Tech Tour

    Started with the Yellotec team departing from Head office to Cape Town. Meeting up with the FLIR team and making our way back to Head Office with stops at:

    Johan Van Vuuren // Yellotec

    Johan Janse van Vuuren is an accomplished Registered Engineering Technician registered with (ECSA) with a career spanning over three decades in electrical maintenance and thermography. His journey began as an apprentice in the gold mines of South Africa, where he honed his skills in electrical and mechanical disciplines. In 1992, Johan earned his National Diploma in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, solidifying his expertise in the field.

    Driven by a passion for continuous learning, Johan furthered his education by completing the Middle Management Programme at Northwest University in Vanderbijlpark. His career took an exciting turn when he was introduced to thermography, a cutting-edge field that uses infrared technology and gas detection to detect issues in electrical, mechanical, and petrochemical facilities. As a certified Level III Thermographer (ITC & ISO 18436-7), Johan became a pioneer in the use of GasfindIR (OGI) cameras in South Africa. In 2007, he became the first technician in the country trained to use and sell these advanced cameras, which play a crucial role in reducing VOC emissions and enhancing predictive maintenance programs.

    Johan joined Yellotec in 2007, where he serves as a Sales Engineer and a key trainer for Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) gas detection courses. His expertise, dedication, and leadership in the field have made him a trusted figure in the application of thermography technology for maintenance in various industries, including electrical, mechanical, and petrochemical sectors.
